Frank Fowler- Drawing in Charcoal and Crayon (1885)

This book and the accompanying plates are in the public domain and available completely free of charge, through the efforts of Judy Jordan who uploaded it to archive.org and the wonderful staff at Stanford Library who found the plates and allowed me to scan them for all of us to enjoy and learn from.

Frank Fowler was a friend and classmate of Sargent, both in the atelier of Carolus Duran and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where they both studied drawing with Adolphe Yvon.

The book details the actual methods used at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and more generally in 19th century studios. Work is done in charcoal and crayon (Conté pierre noire) along with the stump, which develops both efficiency, freedom and accuracy in drawing. This book provides the clearest guide for following the Bargue plates and other similar drawing courses.
